Advent

“When malls to residential streets have become a sea of red and green
Christmas colors, almost from the time Halloween décor comes down,
the purple blue and pink seem something of an anomaly.”
The purple signifies majesty and blue is the color of Mary. You’ll always
see Mary depicted in a blue robe. Advent consists of the four Sundays
preceding Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is considered the
beginning of the ecclesiastical year. It is one of those seasons that can
get lost. We treat the material world with joy, in the main, God has
created it.
The weeks before Christmas are not only a time of anticipation. They
are days with a sense that life is about to change as with the arrival of
any baby.
Advent hymns also have a sense of being watchful, not just for the birth
of a child in Bethlehem, but the ushering in of a new kingdom -- a
second coming, that Christ will come again.
The wreath which hangs from the ceiling, is lowered each Sunday in
Advent so that week’s candle can be lit, along with the candles of the
previous weeks. Two purple candles are lit first. “The Prophet’s Candle”
on the first Sunday of Advent, the “Bethlehem Candle” on the second
Sunday, the pink candle called the “Angel’s Candle” is the third and the
Shepherd’s Candle on the final Advent Sunday. A white candle in the
middle is lit on Christmas.
The 12 days of Christmas, start on Christmas Day and end with the
Feast of Epiphany on January 6th. That is the time of celebration of
the birth of Jesus in the Church.
